Privacy policy

Atlas is a campus app for VIT Vellore made by the VinnovateIT student club (“we”). This policy explains what the Atlas Android app and its server collect, why, and how you can delete it.

What we collect

• Your Google account details when you sign in with your VIT Google account: your name, email address, Google account ID and profile photo address.
• Your display name, if you change it in the app.
• Reviews you post: star rating, comment, the spot reviewed and the date. Reviews are public to other Atlas users together with your display name and Google profile photo.
• Bookmarks: the spots you save.
• Reports: bug reports you send, and reviews you report as objectionable.
• Location: with your permission, the app uses your phone's precise location to show you on the map and to navigate. Most routing happens on your phone. For trips to or from places off campus, the start and end coordinates are sent to our server and on to Google to calculate the route. We don't store your location.
• Technical data: our hosting provider keeps short-lived server logs, such as error messages and request details, to keep the service running.

How we use it

Only to run Atlas: signing you in, showing your bookmarks and reviews, calculating routes, fixing bugs and moderating reviews. We don't sell your data, show ads or use it for tracking.

Who we share it with

• Other Atlas users see your reviews, display name and profile photo.
• Google provides sign-in, maps and route calculation.
• Cloudflare hosts our server and images.
• MongoDB Atlas hosts our database.

These providers process data on our behalf. All data is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS).

How long we keep it

We keep your account data until you delete your account. Deleting it removes your profile, bookmarks, reviews, bug reports and review reports from our database, and signs out every device immediately.

Your choices

• Delete your account in the app under Profile → Delete account, or follow the account deletion page.
• Turn off location access in your phone's settings. The rest of the app keeps working.
• Delete any of your reviews from the spot's page.

Atlas is for VIT Vellore students and staff with a VIT Google account.
